Our Departments

Design

One of the most important part in building of an aircraft is its design. While designing the aircraft, multiple factors such as Control surface parameters, drag reducing accessories, crosswind parameters, analysis of air-foil and fuselage design are taken into consideration keeping in mind the place where the competition is going to be held. After extensive researches, the design team provides factors such as dimension of wings based on the lift requirements, tail dimension as per stability requirements and control surface design as per roll rate and estimated crosswind.

CFD

Computational Fluid Dynamics is performed on ANSYS Fluent and Star CCM, to validate the results provided by the design department which provides more accurate Lift, Drag & Pressure Distribution figures. CFD basically works by solving the governing equations of fluid dynamics i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations. With this, the team is able to analyze the overall aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft and improve further based on CFD results. This aircraft simulation shows the airflow distribution around an aircraft design at low subsonic compressible flow regime.

Structure

This department models the plane on 3D modelling softwares like Solidworks, CATIA etc with the design parameters, to visualize and bring plans into making the aircraft a reality. Structural analysis is done using softwares like ANSYS. The most important role of this department is to incorporate a strong yet light structure by making use of extensive, in-house fabricated composites. This department designs an efficient and reliable payload dropping mechanism, so as to carry and drop the maximum payload. This department also designs landing gear systems for the aircraft.

Avionics

The avionics team designs and implements electronic systems on par with the rest of the aircraft to control and communicate with the craft. We use commercially available flight controllers as well as microcontrollers to develop and test our own logics and play with a host of sensors and actuators. Our aim is also to go beyond the requirements of the mission statements of the competitions we participate in, and venture deeper into the fields of UAVs and autonomous flight systems, using better algorithms, efficient electronics and computer vision.

Propulsion

Propulsion system is vital to an aircraft. It gives life to the aircraft body. The term is derived from two Latin words: pro-forward and pellere- drive. The propulsion system of an aircraft consists an electric motor or an IC engine to generate power and a propeller to generate thrust. A light weight aircraft with high lift capacity is ineffective without an adequately powerful propulsion system. At Falcons we experimented with a wide range of propellers to select the most optimum propeller which is used with our 0.46 CI engine. This propeller to our highly efficient aircrafts has given us international accolades.

Management

Management involves the tactical aspect of day to day functions and keeping control of the work environment to make sure that Assailing Falcons is moving impudently. Team faces umpteen responsibilities each day, one of which is managing events and people. The Management team is responsible for the smooth functioning of each and every department in the team. Further, management looks into documentation and sponsorships as it helps the team financially and brand names help in increasing the overall of confidence of the team.

MECHANISMS USED

  • PAYLOAD DROPPING

  • To drop payloads, we make use of a Pixhawk radio module. Pixhawk is a radio telemetry module which gathers data from the plane such as GPS location, heading velocity, altitude in real time and relay’s it to the ground station. This module can be programmed to drop payloads manually as well as automatically from a height of 300 feet, in case of any signal loss it can be programmed for home lock which will return the plane to its take off point and land it.

  • THERMAL IMAGING

  • Pixhawk is also capable of thermal imaging and can detect hotspots. For instance, if a fire is lit by someone in need of rescue, it can be detected by its heat signature. Other than rescue operations, it can also be used to identify dry spots in a patch of land , by which, optimum irrigation techniques can be applied.

  • SOS DETECTION

  • Apart from payload dropping we have a FPV(Front Person View) camera on board of the plane which provides us with a real time video feed from the plane. This can be used by the pilot as a reference for his heading. We have also implemented various imaging techniques on the plane. It ranges from a simple circle detection from the live feed to more advanced, edge and contour detection to detect SOS. This will be of great help in disaster and rescue missions/operations. When a SOS is detected, the plane can send the location of its origination using Pixhawk, which helps in directing rescue operations to the place.
